Turning Coffee Farmers in Tanzania into Entrepreneurs
25.03.2009 08:23
In Tanzania many smallholder coffee farmers lack knowledge of modern production and processing techniques as well as market information. To turn the tide for coffee farmers in Mbeya Rural and Mbozi Districts International Coffee Partners (ICP) launched a coffee project in May 2006. Full project support is provided to 1000 farmers as direct beneficiaries, while additional 700 farmers also participate in training activities. The project focuses on building up capacity in the production, processing and marketing of coffee as well as on developing strong producer organisations. So far the results are remarkable: All groups have implemented sustainable agricultural practices, improved their coffee quality and increased their yield by sometimes up to 100%. Many of the beneficiaries now enjoy better living conditions, with improvements in the areas of nutrition, housing and access to health care.
