Brazil: The 3rd Coffee Quality Competition

Encouring Farmers To Finetune Their Quality - And Linking Them To The Market

quoteimage

“It was the first time I participated in a coffee competition. It was an honor, and I feel very grateful that my coffee scored this high in quality. In my region, we have many good coffees, so by taking better care of the coffee fields and participating in the competitions like this, we can evolve and reach new markets. This event and the project work help to give us a perspective, so it is an evolution to us. See you in 2017!”

MARCELO VIEIRA, COFFEE PRODUCER

On Oct. 10th to 14th 2016, the Coffee Quality Competition took place in Santo Antonio do Amparo, Minas Gerais, Brazil. For the third time, this event was held, aiming at improving the direct connections between smallholder farmers and coffee traders - and incentivizing the farmers producing a high quality cup of coffee.

Up to date, the “Força Café” project works with more than 6.000 smallholder coffee farmers and their families in 25 cities in the South and East of Minas Gerais, one of the most relevant states for coffee production in Brazil. The project activities include technical assistance to improve their productivity, efficiency and quality. At the same time, the project aims to help the farmers to have more qualification on dealing with their business, marketing, commercialization of their coffee and in the adaptation of the production systems of climate change.

For the Coffee Quality Competition, participating farmers are invited to share samples of their coffee with the project team on the premises. Over the course of several weeks, experts from the coffee sector carefully cup and pre-select the coffees, choosing 50 of them being presented during the 4 days of this event. This format is a substantial way of promoting the high quality of the smallholder farmers participating in the project, showcasing that this coffee can easily keep up with the quality presented by professional plantations. By means of this competition, the farming families are shown that they are perceived as professional business partners - and that, with support in access to micro-finance, training in Best Agricultural Practices, soil analysis and more, it is worth to unfold the qualities of their coffee. The farmer grows; not only in an entrepreneurial way but also in their self-esteem.

We as the International Coffee Partners are a crucial supporter of this project. In the past years, several of our shareholding partners have directly participated in this event. We believe in the results that we obtained until now. The experiences that farmers make encourage them to further engage in sustainable agricultural practices, invest into the quality of their coffee and understand the importance of close interaction with other representatives of the supply chain. It is evident that these competitions are a way of keeping and encouraging the coffee quality.
