The birthplace of Robusta

Next to being the birth place of Robusta, Uganda also has the youngest population in the world with 78% of the population being below the age of 30. It also has the second highest number of coffee farmers in Africa. Approximately 1.5 million smallholder families rely on coffee production as their main source of household income. With an average household size of 7, almost 10 million people depend on coffee production for their livelihood.

However, due to low yields and lack of key services such as processing and marketing, limited access to finance and lack of value addition practices, farmers are only earning a fraction of their potential income. These constraints maintain them persistently indebted towards middlemen and prevent them from becoming more competitive. Cultural traits, in particular gender inequality, further contribute to a lack in household planning and inefficient use of resources.
